Profile of specialization

The specialization “Control technology” is at the hearth of Engineering Cybernetics, an engineering field with a strong mathematical focus on systems theory and control engineering. The methodologies covered in “Control technology” represent the foundations for the design and analysis of so-called cyber-physical systems, characterized by the deep integration between physical and software components.  

Medizintechnik is a successful example of an engineering field which has been revolutionized by cyber-physical systems. Rehabilitation devices, high-precision surgical instruments, and automated support decisions for patients are just a few examples of complex applications that would simply not be possible without a methodological and holistic approach to systems design. Methods from systems theory and control not only allow these systems to be analysed, but also enable active influence through robust and provably optimal feedback mechanisms. To this aim, this specialization offers foundational courses on topics such as optimal and nonlinear control, together with advanced topics such as convex optimization and learning-based control.

The knowledge acquired in “Control technology” opens up excellent career opportunities in the engineering sector. Students can shape professional profiles which are suited for almost all branches of industry, including of course medical technology and biotechnology but also mechanical engineering, automotive industry, aerospace engineering, chemical industry and robotics. Furthermore, the methodological and mathematical-oriented nature of the courses suitably prepares the students for research work and doctoral studies.
