At the beginning of October 2023, the IFSW started the HeriNEsp II project together with the project partners at the Institute for Metal Forming Technology at the University of Stuttgart.
HeriNEsp II is the follow-up of the DFG project HeriNEsp I, which investigated the influence of residual stresses in formed components on the formation of centerline hot cracks. The new project is now focused on the reduction of transverse cracks during laser beam welding of aluminum alloys, which primarily occur at high feed rates. To achieve this goal, the project pursues the idea of introducing compressive residual stresses by the initial forming process, which later counteract the formation of transverse cracks in the joining zone during the welding process.
